More funk (and summer festival advertising)

June 21, 2012

Do you remember my post on Zainichi Funk?
Today I bring you some more funk. Accidentally, I just found out that most of these bands are going to the next Indie Festival in Shimokitazawa this July, so if you are in Tokyo on the 1st of July, make sure to pay these concerts a visit in Indie Fan Club Shimokitazawa! (Zainichi Funk, Petrolz and Gentle Forest Jazz Band, among many others)
Indie Fan Club Shimokitazawa

Petrolz is worth a good listen. Vocal, bass and drums, here on a live performance which is part of the SLEEPERS FILM project, one in the same fashion as the famous TAKE AWAY SHOWS.

Although this Big Band band is a bit unrelated to the title, Zainichi Funk’s trumpeter also plays in it and it is DEFINATELY worth a listen. Here is a funny video from Gentle Forest Jazz Band.

SAKEROCK is Zainichi Funk’s Kenta Hamano’s other band. Generally more famous than the former, however. Mostly instrumental, awesomely cool.

Post and math rock Top 5 (oops Top 6)

October 23, 2011

The contained excitement of post-rock and math-rock, with its powerful but voiceless sound, matches somehow very well with the Japanese reserve, I believe. And in fact there is a whole lot of amazing material around, in these genres.

“Mono”, one of the most famous post-rock artists worldwide, with some Classical influences.

“te'” with their always endless song titles

“Condor44”, Vocals in this kind of genre are pretty rare, there’s not much besides Sigur Ros (and Toe or downy, in Japan?).

If you are curious about their closer to Indie-Rock songs, try this one!

“LITE” similar to Toe

For the ones not yet tired from my top 5, here goes a last song, by “downy”.

Take away shows and the streets of Tokyo

September 13, 2011

Today I chose a couple of songs with videos shot in the streets of Tokyo, which I think will provide a nice virtual traveling experience!
Two of them are Take away shows (played live on the streets). Shugo Tokumaru and Tenniscoats. Shimo Kitazawa, one of the locations, is actually a town next to where I was living before, with lots of bars, record stores and some concert spots.

Not a live show, but a good portrait of Shimo Kitazawa at night.

Tokyo instrumental concert scene

September 6, 2011

Yesterday I took a peek at one of the many concert hotspots in Shibuya (o-nest) and was surprised once again. 3 or 4 of lives per day, every day of the week, and this kind of club is all over town. Where they get so many bands from I don’t know, but they do seem not to end, even for sophisticated, experimental kind of genres. Anyway, discovered a couple new bands on the jazz / post-rock borderline.

And from a japanese guy on the venue I heard about those supposed to be the “gods” of the genre, toe and Special Others.
「toe」と「Special Others」。
